Kingu Kongu in 1 Utama

Ramen in Malaysia: This Modern Japanese Spot Has a Secretly Good Ramen

When I’m exploring the Ramen in Malaysia scene, I’ve learned to keep an open mind. Sometimes, a great bowl comes from a place you least expect. I was back at 1 Utama Shopping Centre, a mall so big I swear I discover a new wing every time I visit. I wasn't in the mood for a food court or a super-traditional, tiny counter. I wanted to try something modern and fun. That’s when I remembered seeing Kingu Kongu.

It's one of those trendy, modern Japanese restaurants with a cool monster-themed logo and a varied menu. It's not a dedicated ramen-ya, which made me skeptical. This would definitely be one for my Ramen Reviews - Others category—a place that does a lot of things, but I was there to see if they could do ramen right.

First Impressions: Modern, Trendy, and Fun

Kingu Kongu has a great vibe. It’s located in the "Rainforest" section of the mall, and the interior is sleek, modern, and very comfortable. It's a proper restaurant, not just a stall, with fun, colourful monster graphics that give it a unique personality. It’s the kind of place you'd bring a group of friends for a long lunch, which is a very different atmosphere from the solo-dining vibe at Not A Ramen.

The Broth: A Surprisingly Rich Tori Paitan

I scanned their menu (which you can see here) and was happy to see a dedicated "Ramen" section. They had both a clear shoyu and a rich paitan. I opted for their signature Tori Paitan Ramen.

When the bowl arrived, I was immediately impressed. It looked fantastic—a creamy, white broth that promised a lot of flavour. I took my first sip and... it was a genuine, high-quality paitan. It was rich, creamy from the chicken collagen, and packed with a deep, savoury umami. It wasn't a "lite" version; this was a full-bodied, authentic-tasting chicken broth that could easily rival a dedicated ramen shop.

Noodles and Toppings: The Full Works

The noodles were thin and springy, cooked to a nice, firm texture. The toppings were also generous and well-executed. The bowl came with two large, tender-cooked chicken slices, a perfectly jammy ajitama (egg), and a scattering of fresh greens and crunchy menma (bamboo shoots). It was a complete, satisfying bowl that felt like a main event, not an afterthought on a large menu.

The "Yes and No" Pointers

Here’s my authentic take on this modern restaurant's ramen:

The "Yes":

  • The Broth is a Legit Paitan: This isn't a watered-down "restaurant" version. It's a proper, rich, and creamy chicken broth.

  • Great Atmosphere: The trendy, fun, and comfortable setting is a big plus. It's a great place to hang out.

  • Varied Menu for Groups: This is the perfect spot if you're craving ramen but your friends want something else (like donburi or maki).

  • High-Quality Toppings: The chicken was tender, and the egg was perfect. They didn't skimp.

The "No":

  • Not a Specialist Shop: Because it's a full-service restaurant, it lacks that intense, focused, "ramen master" vibe of a tiny counter-only shop.

  • It's Not "Quiet": It’s in a popular part of a busy mall. It’s great for energy but not for a quiet, contemplative meal.

  • Tempting Menu: The ramen is great, but you'll be tempted by all the other delicious-looking dishes on the Food Panda.

Final Thoughts: A Modern Restaurant That Nails a Classic

Kingu Kongu was a fantastic surprise. It proves that a modern, trendy restaurant can take a classic dish like ramen seriously and absolutely nail it. It’s a perfect "gateway" ramen for people who are new to it, and a satisfying bowl for an enthusiast who also wants a comfortable, fun atmosphere.

This is a great addition to the Ramen in Malaysia scene, showing that great bowls are truly everywhere.

Happy Slurping,

Emily
