Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen

All About Ramen: Uncovering Kagura's Chicken Broth in Bukit Bintang

Some of my favorite days are the ones where I have no set plans and can simply wander. This past weekend, I decided to explore the vibrant back alleys of Bukit Bintang, camera in hand. After a few hours of getting lost in a world of colourful murals, the familiar call for a comforting bowl of noodles struck. My search for Ramen in Malaysia led me to Lot 10's "J's Gate Dining," a floor dedicated to authentic Japanese food.

Tucked inside this bustling food hall is Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen. A shop that puts "Chicken Ramen" right in its name? This is a specialist. For someone who believes that learning all about ramen involves understanding the nuances of each broth type, this felt like a perfect discovery.

First Impressions: A Slice of Tokyo in KL

Stepping into J's Gate Dining is an experience. It's designed to feel like a Tokyo food street, and Kagura's stall is a cozy, counter-focused spot within it. The space is intimate, with a long wooden counter that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a traditional ramen-ya. It’s an establishment that puts all its focus on the food, creating an atmosphere of authentic anticipation.

The Broth: A Masterclass in Tori Paitan

Kagura’s specialty is Tori Paitan, a rich and creamy white broth made by simmering chicken bones for hours. I ordered their signature Kagura Tori Paitan.

The broth was luxuriously thick and creamy, with a deep, savoury chicken flavour that was incredibly satisfying. It wasn't just a simple chicken soup; it was complex, rich, and had a wonderful mouthfeel from the collagen. It’s the kind of broth that warms you from the inside out. They also offer a "Spicy Miso" version, which I saw many people ordering.

Noodles and Toppings: The Perfect Harmony

The noodles were thin and firm, cooked to perfection to provide a wonderful chewy texture that held up beautifully in the thick broth.

The toppings were just as impressive. The chicken chashu was incredibly tender and flavourful, a testament to their mastery of chicken-based ingredients. The ajitama (marinated egg) had a perfectly molten, custardy yolk that added another layer of creaminess to the bowl. The dish was rounded out with fresh spring onions and bamboo shoots, providing a much-needed crunch and freshness. The "Yes and No" Pointers

Here’s my authentic take on Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen:

The "Yes":

  • Authentic and Rich Broth: The Tori Paitan is the star here. It’s one of the best and most authentic chicken ramen broths I’ve had in KL.

  • Cozy Atmosphere: The intimate, counter-style seating provides a genuine Japanese ramen-ya experience.

  • Excellent Toppings: The tender chicken chashu and perfectly cooked egg are top-notch.

  • Prime Location: It's a perfect spot to refuel after shopping or exploring Bukit Bintang.

The "No":

  • Food Hall Setting: While J's Gate is great, it's a shared space. It can get loud, and finding a seat at the counter itself can be a challenge during peak hours.

  • Very Focused Menu: If you're not in the mood for chicken ramen, your options will be very limited. This is a specialist shop.

  • Can Be Rich: The Tori Paitan broth is incredibly rich and creamy, which might be too heavy for some palates.

Final Thoughts: A Must-Try for Chicken Ramen Lovers

Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen is a shining example of a shop that does one thing and does it exceptionally well. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves a rich, creamy chicken ramen and appreciates an authentic atmosphere. My spontaneous street art adventure led me to a truly memorable meal, reinforcing my belief that the Ramen in Malaysia scene is full of world-class specialists. If you’re serious about learning all about ramen, a visit to Kagura is essential.

Happy Slurping,

Emily
