Sushi King - Mid Valley Megamall

Sushi King Ramen Review: A Surprise Bowl at Malaysia's Sushi Hub?

We've all been there. You're in a big mall—this time, it was Mid Valley Megamall for me—you're hungry, and you want something fast, familiar, and satisfying. My friend and I decided on Sushi King, a name that's practically synonymous with casual, accessible sushi in Malaysia.

My plan was simple: grab a few plates of salmon nigiri from the conveyor belt and call it a day. But as we sat down, I glanced at the full menu. Tucked among the bento sets and donburi was a dedicated noodle section. My eyes landed on "Spicy Chicken Ramen."

A question immediately popped into my head: Is it any good? This blog is my journey to find the best Ramen in Malaysia, but it's also about exploring all ramen. This was the ultimate test for my Ramen Reviews - Others category. I had to order it.

First Impressions: The Classic Kaiten-zushi Vibe

This is, of course, not a quiet, dedicated ramen bar. It’s a bright, bustling, and friendly family restaurant. The star of the show is the kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi), and the sound of families chatting and plates clinking fills the air. It’s a fun, high-energy atmosphere, but the polar opposite of the zen-like focus you'd find at a specialist shop like Maruki Ramen.

The Broth: A Surprisingly Solid Kick

My expectations, honestly, were not sky-high. I was here for sushi, after all. But when the Spicy Ramen Noodles arrived, it looked and smelled genuinely appetizing.

A close-up of spicy ramen noodles in a bowl, showcasing the rich red broth, a vibrant ajitama egg, and green toppings.

The broth was a deep, reddish-orange, and it was piping hot. I took my first sip. I was pleasantly surprised! It was a flavourful, chicken-based broth with a very satisfying kick of spice and a savoury miso base. Was it an 8-hour, artisanal paitan? No. But it was a robust, well-seasoned, and delicious soup that had me going back for more. It was much better than I expected.

Noodles and Toppings: Good Value

The noodles were standard, springy ramen noodles, cooked well (not mushy, thankfully!). The toppings were also quite generous for the price. The bowl came with slices of tender grilled chicken, sweet corn, a half-marinated egg (ajitama), and fresh spring onions. The egg wasn't as jammy as a specialist's, but the chicken was juicy and worked really well with the spicy broth.

The "Yes and No" Pointers

Here’s my authentic take on this widely available bowl:

The "Yes":

  • Incredibly Convenient: There is a Sushi King in almost every mall. It's probably the most accessible ramen on this blog.

  • Great Value: The price-to-portion ratio is excellent. It’s an affordable, filling meal.

  • The "Something for Everyone" Spot: It's the perfect solution if you're craving ramen but your friends are demanding sushi.

  • Surprisingly Tasty Broth: The Spicy Chicken broth, in particular, is genuinely flavourful and satisfies a spicy craving.

The "No":

  • Not a Specialist Bowl: It lacks the depth, nuance, and complexity of a dedicated ramen bar. It's not really "worth the hype" in a "foodie" sense, as I discussed in this post.

  • The Atmosphere: It's a loud, bright, fast-casual restaurant, not a cozy ramen-ya.

  • The Toppings are "Good," Not "Great": The egg is a standard inclusion rather than a perfectly marinated, custardy highlight.

Final Thoughts: The Perfect "Casual Craving" Fix

Sushi King's ramen was a fantastic, pleasant surprise. It’s not going to win "Best Ramen in Malaysia," but it's not trying to. It’s a delicious, convenient, and affordable option for when you have a ramen craving but also want the fun of a sushi conveyor belt.

It’s a reminder that good noodles can be found in all sorts of places. I’d happily order it again.

Happy Slurping,
Emily
