Chiba Ramen (Cheras)

Chiba Ramen Review: The Neighborhood Gem in Cheras

While I love the glitz and glamour of Bukit Bintang’s ramen scene, there is something so rewarding about finding a "neighborhood hero." This week, I escaped the city center and headed to Cheras to visit Chiba Ramen. I’d been seeing photos of their thick, bubbling broths on Instagram for months, and I wanted to see if the flavor lived up to the hype.

The welcoming and simple storefront of Chiba Ramen, a favorite neighborhood spot in Cheras.

I recently visited Maruki Ramen at The LINC for a high-end experience, but Chiba Ramen offers a completely different vibe. It’s cozy, unpretentious, and feels like the kind of place you’d go for a midweek comfort meal. If you’re hunting for the Best Ramen in Malaysia, you have to look beyond the big malls!

First Impressions: Cozy and Unpretentious

Chiba Ramen is tucked away in a classic Cheras shoplot area. The interior is simple but warm, with Japanese posters on the walls and an open kitchen that fills the room with the aroma of simmering broth. It’s the kind of place where you see students, families, and solo diners all happily slurping away.

One thing that immediately stood out was the Official Chiba Ramen Facebook Page—they are constantly updating their menu with seasonal specials and listening to customer feedback. It gives the shop a real "soul" that you don't always get with big international chains.

The Broth: Creamy, Savory, and Surprisingly Deep

I ordered their signature Chicken Paitan Ramen. For a shop that is so affordable, the depth of the broth is incredible. It is thick, creamy, and has a beautiful golden hue. It’s clearly been slow-cooked for a long time to extract all that savory goodness.

A close-up of the signature Chicken Paitan Ramen, showing the thick golden broth and generous chicken toppings.

Unlike the more refined Shoyu broth at The Tokyo Ramen, this is a "heavy-hitter" bowl. It’s rich and comforting, with a salinity that is perfectly balanced against the creamy chicken base. The noodles are medium-thin with a good "snap" to them, holding up well even in the thickest parts of the soup.

The Toppings: Generosity in Every Bowl

Chiba Ramen doesn't hold back on the toppings. The chicken chashu is thick-cut and tender, and the ajitama (seasoned egg) had a perfectly gooey, orange center. I also tried their Chicken Karaage on the side—it was crispy, hot, and seasoned with a touch of ginger that cut through the richness of the ramen beautifully.

The best part? The price point. You are getting a bowl that feels "premium" for a fraction of the cost you'd pay in KLCC or Bangsar. It truly is a local hero.

The "Yes and No" Pointers

Here is my authentic take on this Cheras destination:

The "Yes":

  • Incredible Value for Money: One of the most affordable high-quality bowls in the Klang Valley.

  • The Paitan Broth: Rich, creamy, and deeply satisfying. A total comfort bowl.

  • Local Vibe: A welcoming, friendly environment that feels very "authentic" to the neighborhood.

  • Side Dishes: The Karaage and Gyoza are solid performers that round out the meal perfectly.

The "No":

  • Parking in Cheras: Like many great neighborhood spots, finding a parking space nearby can be a bit of a challenge during peak hours!

  • Smaller Menu: They focus on doing a few things very well, so don't expect the massive 50-item menus you see at places like UMAI.

  • Busy Weekends: It’s a local favorite, so it can get crowded. Go early!

Final Thoughts: The Pride of Cheras

Chiba Ramen is a perfect example of why I love food hunting. It’s a passionate, local business serving up a bowl of noodles that can go toe-to-toe with the big names in the city. If you’re in Cheras or don't mind a little "noodle pilgrimage," this spot is a mandatory entry in your Ramen Reviews - Others checklist.

You can find their exact coordinates to navigate the Cheras streets on Google Maps.

Happy Slurping,

Emily

A Top Pick for Ramen in Bukit Bintang When you’re wandering through Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur’s busiest district, sometimes all you want is a bowl of comfort. For me, that comfort came in the form of Torigen Chicken Ramen at Lot 10. I had heard the buzz— chicken-based ramen, affordable prices, and rich broth—and I was curious whether it could really live up to its reputation as one of the best ramen in Malaysia . Spoiler: it did, and then some. First Impressions Finding Torigen wasn’t difficult; it’s tucked away in J’s Gate Dining on the 4th floor of Lot 10 , a lively cluster of Japanese eateries that TimeOut Kuala Lumpur  often highlights as a foodie hotspot. The atmosphere was casual but welcoming, and I liked being able to peek into the open kitchen where steam rose from huge pots of broth. There’s something reassuring about seeing your ramen crafted right in front of you. What I Tried Torigen Ramen (Original) I started with the house specialty. My bowl came with milky...
