Genki Japanese Food (Kampar)

Genki Japanese Food Review: A Ramen Gem in Kampar?

My foodie tour of Perak has been such an incredible experience. After the mind-blowing smoky bowl at Ony Ramen in Ipoh, my journey took me south to the historic and charming town of Kampar. It’s a famous university town, and I was excited to see what the local food scene had to offer.

While Kampar is known for its own local delights, I was surprised to find a very popular and bustling modern Japanese restaurant called Genki Japanese Food. It was packed with students and families—always a good sign. My hunt for Ramen in Malaysia is all about finding it everywhere, so I popped in, very curious to see what a "university town" ramen would be like.

The exterior of Genki Japanese Food in Kampar,

First Impressions: Bright, Bustling, and a HUGE Menu

This is a classic, casual Japanese restaurant. It’s bright, clean, air-conditioned, and buzzing with energy. It’s not a tiny, specialist bar, but a full-service restaurant. The first thing I noticed was the menu—it is massive! They have everything from sushi and maki to bento sets and donburi. This is a place designed to have something for everyone. I immediately zeroed in on the ramen section.

The Broth: A Solid, Hearty Katsu Ramen

I opted for the Tori Katsu Ramen (Chicken Cutlet Ramen). It felt like a perfect, hearty student meal. This experience was instantly reminding me of my visit to Sushi Mentai in Taiping, where the katsu-ramen combo proved to be a fantastic, filling, and affordable choice.

A close-up of the Tori Katsu Ramen, showing the shoyu broth, springy noodles, and a large, golden-fried chicken cutlet on top.

The bowl arrived, and it was a generous portion. The broth was a simple, savoury, and comforting shoyu (soy) base. It wasn't a complex, 8-hour artisanal broth, but it was flavourful, hot, and satisfying. It was the perfect, hearty soup for a big bowl of noodles.

Noodles and Toppings: The Crispy Katsu Star

The noodles were standard, springy ramen noodles, and they did their job well. But the real star was the Tori Katsu. It was a large, golden, panko-crusted chicken cutlet, fried to perfection. It was wonderfully crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Just like at Sushi Mentai, I was faced with the classic katsu-ramen dilemma: do I eat the katsu first while it's crispy, or let it soak up the delicious broth? I did a bit of both, and it was great either way. For the price, it was a very generous and satisfying topping.

The "Yes and No" Pointers

Here’s my authentic take on this Kampar gem:

The "Yes":

  • Amazing Value: This is a student town, and the prices reflect that. The portions are large, and the prices are very affordable.

  • The Katsu is a Winner: The chicken katsu was large, crispy, and delicious. A perfect ramen topping.

  • "Something for Everyone" Menu: The huge menu makes this the perfect spot to go with a big group of friends who all want something different.

  • Convenient Location: It’s easy to find in Kampar's new town area, right on Google Maps.

The "No":

  • It's a "Chain" Broth: The soup is simple and savoury, but it's not a complex, artisanal broth. This is a "fast-casual" bowl, not a "purist's" bowl.

  • Loud, Casual Vibe: It’s a busy, popular restaurant. It's great for energy and people-watching, but not for a quiet, zen meal.

  • The Soggy Factor: As with all katsu ramen, you're in a race against time to eat the crispy cutlet before the broth wins!

Final Thoughts: The Perfect Student Town Go-To

Genki Japanese Food was a fantastic find! It's the ideal local Japanese joint: affordable, fast, friendly, and serving up a huge menu of crowd-pleasing dishes. The Tori Katsu Ramen was hearty, delicious, and an incredible value.

It’s a perfect example of the diverse Ramen in Malaysia scene, and a spot I’d be visiting all the time if I were a student in Kampar.

Happy Slurping,

Emily

A Top Pick for Ramen in Bukit Bintang When you’re wandering through Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur’s busiest district, sometimes all you want is a bowl of comfort. For me, that comfort came in the form of Torigen Chicken Ramen at Lot 10.
