Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen (Lot 10)

Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen: The Queen of Collagen

While I was wandering through Bukit Bintang recently, I found myself drawn back to the 4th floor of Lot 10. There’s a specific spot there that looks like a slice of old Tokyo, tucked within the wonderful J’s Gate Dining food hall. This is Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen, a name that carries a lot of weight in the "pork-free" community.

A shot of the busy open kitchen at Kagura showing the large steaming pots used to slow-cook their chicken paitan.

I’ve spent months hunting for the Best Ramen in Malaysia, and one thing I’ve learned—especially after my amazing experience with the smoky broth at Ony Ramen in Ipoh—is that creating a rich, creamy broth without pork is an art form. Kagura is a true master of this. An offshoot of the famous Seimenka Kaguraya in Tokyo, they’ve brought their secret recipes right to the heart of KL.

First Impressions: Authentic Tokyo Soul

Walking into the J’s Gate area feels like being transported to a high-end food court in Shinjuku. Kagura’s stall, with its beautiful wooden facade and steaming open kitchen, immediately draws you in. I read a great FMT review that mentioned how Kagura’s recipes were always pork-free even back in Japan, which is quite rare for a traditional ramen-ya.

The vibe here is focused and efficient. You see the chefs carefully skimming the broth and preparing the noodles with a level of dedication that makes you realize this isn't just "mall food." It’s serious ramen.

The Broth: Liquid Gold and Collagen

Kagura offers two paths for your taste buds: the "Natural" (clear) broth or the "Premium" (rich) broth. If you’ve read my Tokyo Ramen Bangsar review, you know I appreciate a clean shoyu, but today I was here for the heavy hitter: the Premium Rich Chicken Ramen (Tori Paitan).

This broth is absolute liquid gold. It’s slow-cooked using only chicken bones and a blend of ingredients flown in from Japan, including dried scallops, bonito, and konbu. The result is a milky-white, velvety soup that is incredibly rich in collagen—they even call it a "beauty soup"! It has a depth of flavor that rivals any pork-based broth I’ve tried, but it leaves you feeling much less greasy. It’s thick, luxurious, and hits that umami sweet spot perfectly.

The Toppings: Tender Chicken and Jammy Eggs

The bowl comes topped with tender chicken char siew that has a subtle smoky finish. The ajitama (seasoned egg) is exactly what I look for—the whites are firm and savory, while the yolk is a perfect, jammy orange cream that enriches the broth as you break it.

I opted for the thin noodles, which were cooked to a perfect "firm" texture. They do an excellent job of carrying that thick collagen broth to your mouth with every slurp. If you're feeling adventurous, I’ve heard their Premium Spicy Miso is also a top contender for those who like a little fire in their bowl.

The "Yes and No" Pointers

Here is my authentic take on this Lot 10 icon:

The "Yes":

  • Incredible Collagen Broth: It is thick, creamy, and deeply satisfying. One of the best paitans in the city.

  • Authentic Heritage: The Tokyo roots are evident in the quality and consistency of the flavor.

  • Highly Muslim-Friendly: Known for being Halal-certified and pork-free, making it a very safe and popular choice for the community.

  • Variety: Whether you want clear, rich, or spicy broth, they have a "premium" version of everything.

The "No":

  • Mall Food Court Vibe: While J's Gate is nice, it is still a food court. It can get very loud and crowded, especially during the lunch rush.

  • Consistency: As noted in some Trip.com reviews, the broth can sometimes vary slightly in thickness during peak hours, but it’s usually top-notch.

  • Price: It’s more expensive than the neighboring 9.9 Ramen, but you are definitely paying for that premium collagen richness.

Final Thoughts: The Beauty Bowl of Bukit Bintang

Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen is a mandatory stop for anyone on a ramen pilgrimage through KL. It proves that chicken ramen can be just as sophisticated and "heavy" as its pork counterparts. If you’re shopping in Bukit Bintang and your skin (or your stomach) needs a boost, head to the 4th floor. You can find their exact coordinates on Google Maps.

Happy Slurping,

Emily
