Ramen Matsuri (Sunway Pyramid)

Ramen Matsuri Review: The Dark Magic of Black Garlic in Sunway

If you’ve been following my "noodle pilgrimage," you know that I’m a regular at Sunway Pyramid. It’s one of those malls where you can get lost for hours, but I always find my way back to the Blue Atrium for a fix. While I’ve raved about the spicy kicks here before, this visit was all about a different kind of intensity. I came specifically for the "dark side" of their menu: the Black Garlic Ramen.

Lately, I’ve been alternating between the high-end, precise creations like Ramen David in TTDI and the soulful, neighborhood charm of Chiba Ramen in Cheras. Ramen Matsuri sits right in the middle—it’s approachable mall food that secretly carries the soul of a traditional Japanese kitchen.

First Impressions: The Aroma of the Blue Atrium

Walking up to Ramen Matsuri always feels like a celebration. The staff are high-energy, and the open kitchen is a constant blur of steam and motion. You can actually smell the garlic from a few shops away—it’s a deep, toasted scent that acts like a siren call for hungry shoppers.

I checked the Sunway Pyramid directory to see if they had any new seasonal sides, and I noticed they’ve been leaning heavily into their "Black Series." According to their Official Facebook Page, the black garlic oil (Mayu) is made in-house by slow-roasting garlic until it turns jet black and sweet. It’s a labor-intensive process, and you can really taste that dedication in the bowl.

The Broth: Earthy, Smoky, and Deep

I ordered the Black Garlic Original Torikoku. When the bowl arrives, it’s visually stunning. The signature creamy white chicken broth is swirled with streaks of pitch-black garlic oil, creating a beautiful marbled effect.

A stunning close-up of the Black Garlic Ramen, showing the creamy white broth marbled with dark, aromatic black garlic oil.

The first sip is a total departure from a standard chicken soup. The black garlic adds a layer of earthiness and a subtle, smoky sweetness that lingers on the palate. It’s not "sharp" like raw garlic; instead, it’s mellow, complex, and incredibly savory. It transforms the original creamy paitan base into something much more "grown-up" and sophisticated. The noodles, which are handmade and have a slightly rougher texture, do an amazing job of "trapping" that aromatic oil in every bite.

The Highlights: Minced Meat and Gyoza

While the chicken slices are always a solid choice, I particularly loved the Minced Chicken Balls in this version. They are seasoned with a hint of ginger and scallions, providing a nice textural contrast to the silky broth.

And because no visit to Matsuri is complete without sides, I paired my bowl with their Pan-Fried Gyoza. These are a crowd favorite for a reason—the wrappers are thin and crispy on the bottom, with a juicy, savory filling that balances the heavy, earthy tones of the black garlic soup. It’s a classic pairing that never fails to satisfy.

The "Yes and No" Pointers

Here is my authentic take on the "Black Garlic" experience:

The "Yes":

  • Depth of Flavor: The black garlic oil is the real deal. It’s rich, smoky, and adds incredible complexity to the chicken base.

  • Noodle Texture: The house-made noodles have a fantastic bite that holds up well against the heavy oils.

  • Fast Service: Even when it’s busy, the kitchen is a well-oiled machine. Your food arrives hot and fresh.

  • Customizable: You can easily add extra toppings like black fungus or more spring onions to round out the meal.

The "No":

  • Intense Aroma: If you aren't a fan of garlic, this bowl might be a bit overwhelming for you!

  • Mall Buzz: It’s a lively spot, so don’t expect a quiet, intimate dinner during the weekend rush.

  • Richness: The combination of creamy chicken and black garlic oil is very filling—you might find yourself needing a long walk around the mall afterward!

Final Thoughts: A Dark Delight

Ramen Matsuri’s Black Garlic bowl is a testament to how a single ingredient can completely change the personality of a dish. It’s a deep, comforting, and highly addictive entry in my Ramen Reviews - Others collection. If you’re tired of the same old chicken soup and want something with a bit more mystery, this is the bowl for you.

Happy Slurping,
